I decided this week to talk about the importance of knowing as much about your craft as you can, so that you can sell yourself to your potential client. As I mentioned in my previous blog, I have had a passion for filmmaking from a very young age, and as such, I decided that this would eventually be a career and not just a hobby. A few days after I had posted my initial blog I was at work when I overheard a young woman talking about how she needed to find someone quickly to run the camera  for a short training film that she was doing for her company.  I took this as my chance to sell myself as the sound guy she never knew she needed.

The conversation stared off as a cordial introduction, with me mentioning that I might know someone that could help her out. We spoke for about thirty minutes about what the film was going to be about, and then I politely asked if she had a linked-in account, or Facebook. As the fate would have it, she had both. I then in a very subtle way, suggested that she check out both the linked-in profiles of the contact that I had made from a previous film, as well as checkout my pages.

By utilizing the power of social media to not only market a contact, but also myself, I was able to secure a job and a brand new contact. So being as familiar as you can be with your brand, product or service is one of the most important things that I feel you'll ever need to know in order to properly market it. Also, carrying around a sample of your work in your phone as a digital portfolio would be another way to market your brand on the fly.

  1. Hey, great post! It's really great that you are taking advantage of opportunities like that to promote yourself and your skills. To be the best at your craft, you need to know as much as you can about it. And like you said, knowing as much as you can about your craft is also helpful to marketing yourself. And when marketing yourself, while it is important to know your craft, also make sure to find a way to stand out. Put your personality into how you market yourself because that will make you unique and people will remember that more. But all in all, you told a great story that goes to show that networking with people is one of the best ways to promote yourself!

  2. I never thought to keep anything on my phone in the case I came into a similar situation. That's a great idea i'm going to have to try to incorporate. And awesome job taking the initiative of an opportunity like that. Keep it up. Personal branding is going to be an important part of being a student from Full Sail.

  3. Do what you love, and love what you do! When you have a passion for something, it definitely makes you want to learn more about it. The more you know about your craft, the easier it is to promote it. It's great that you were able to use the skills you learned so far at Full Sail to put yourself out there and help someone in need. Networking skills are definitely important in the entertainment industry. The digital portfolio on your phone is an awesome idea. I hadn't even thought about that. You never know where you might meet someone and need that information. Keep up the good work William!
